Bittersweet Decisions

As most of you know I've had my shop now for almost a year! And I want to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of you that has come from far and near to support me. When I opened the shop I was in hopes that's that it would replace (financially) one or two shows that we do throughout the year. BUT that's just not the case. While the shop has done well it's not doing good enough to fore go any of the big shows that  we do. And I have to have a totally different inventory for the store than I do for the shows, that means keeping up two different styles.

In the upcoming months we are facing several medical events that will prevent me from being in the store. First of all, Craig will be having HIP replacement surgery on Nov. 6th. After that surgery comes some knee work, not sure exactly what that will be. So we are looking at 3 month window that he will be out of commission. That will mean several visits to Doctors and a couple of months of physical therapy. There is no way I can be two places at once, and I'm sure he won't be able to drive a car with his whole leg in a brace.

The only alternative I see is to close the shop. I know there are several of you still making plans to come visit me. Oct. 20th will be the last day I am open, that will be the day of the crossing festival here in town. You still have time to come visit.

I also decided that I may eventually have some sales at my house. If any of you would be interest in being on my mailing list please email me your address and I will add you.

Been in a similar situation. I had to make the financial decision to close my shop. It was sad at first, kind of like a death in the family. But now....it's so much better. I'm able to pick and choose what and where I'll be and spend more time at home. You'll be happier in the long run. And better rested! :) good luck to you and hubby with his surgery!

I am so sorry to hear this. You have such a gift for what you do.
My husband had a hip replacement a few years ago here in FL. The Dr.that did the replacement is one of 4 that did this special procedure and he trained the other 3 and my husband was walking the next day and up a ladder in in 10 days. You may want to call FL Orthopedic to see what the procedure is called as it is beyond minimal invasive procedure. The only bad part of the whole deal was the flu bug he got from the hospital.

So sorry to hear this. Your shop always looks beautiful, but it can be hard to keep up with it as well as life. Wishing you and Craig speedy recovery!

So sorry to hear this, but you have to do what works best for you. I hope Craig's surgery goes well with a fast recovery:-)

I like your idea of a sale at your home. I used to do this and it was fun, but we just live too far out to get the turnout I needed to make it profitable. Wish I lived closer to you cause I'd be first in line!

Good luck to you.

Tot, You and Craig will be in my prayers. I know you had your heart set on your shop. But your husband will have to come first. Thinking of you, Smiles, xo, Susie

Frankly, I am envious of those of you who are able to recognize when to call it quits! I, unfortunately have let that time pass and am in full-on denial now.
Hope to see you at Vintage Marketplace again this year.
Best wishes for Craig's speedy healing.

You are amazing, my friend.
You stepped out in faith and did something that most of us don't have the courage to do. This counts as a huge success in my book.

You and Craig will be in my prayers, and I will see you soon!

Big hugs,
Anne

It is hard to make some of those decisions, isn't it, TOT? I know that you are doing what is best for you. Sometimes you really have to go with an idea to see if it works or not...and this one looks like it is not what you expected.

Blessings to your hubby as he undergoes his surgery and recovery...an blessings to you, too, as you step into a caretaker role for a while- xo Diana

TOT,
Sounds like you've got your priorities straight. I know you prayed long and hard, but I also know God has big plans for you...huge!
I think having a sale from time to time at your home would be a perfect fit. Heck fire...folks would come just to get a gander at your stylin' wizardry!
I'll see you soon...just 3 weeks in fact.
Prayers for Craig...and you my sweet hillbilly!

Oh dear! Such a beautiful little shop you have! Not an easy decision. Shops and shows ARE so different in merchandise aren't they? I wish you and your husband the best with what's ahead. Hugs

I am happy to hear that Craig will be on the mend soon and chasing you around the booth!

Take good care of yourself during the last month of the shop. Changes may be needed but it doesn't make them easy to live through.

Your sales will be incredible....just like everything that you do my darling girl!

hmmmm? what to say that everyone above me hasn't said already?

I know you have weighed all the options and made the best decision for you, right now, in this place...that is all we should do, all we can do.

Faith and hope will see you along this new path.

Wish I could see you in TX and then follow you home for the sale.... : (

I hope the surgeries go well for your husband. I am sure this was a difficult decision. I am having my second knee replacement in January and yes, the recovery does take some time, but it is well worth it when you come out on the other side.
Hugs,

It must be a hard decision to give up your shop - it is beautiful, and will be a great loss to old downtown Glendale. Your hubby will need lots of TLC for a while.

I wish you success in your shows on the road, and to future sales you have out of your home.

I'm going to get by either at the Glendale Days, or before. I have visions of one of those fabulous dress forms in my head :>) See you soon.

Though most of us feel pretty blessed to work with things we love and people we love, this business is still a hard way to make a living. And I'm sure that closing the store been a difficult decision for you. We are praying for you and Craig. Rest when you can - both of you. Sending ((Hugs))

Your store is such a magical place Theresa! If I lived closer I would be there at least once a week! I hope I can pop in at least one more time before you close. If you have sales at your house, I will SO be there if possible!
I hope all goes well with your husband and I send you best wishes for all your future endeavors. Whatever you do, I'm sure it will be something special!

Miss T I'm sorry to hear you are closing the shop, but happy that you'll be selling at your house. Good for you! It'll be less work in the long run. I hope Craig has a speedy recovery. Open an etsy shop and sell smalls, you can make a bit of money now, especially coming up to X-mas.

Love you girl,

I am so happy for you that you have been able to live a dream of owning your own shop:) But I do understand how much time it takes to have one. Even with Nicole and I running our shop there never seems to be enough time for other things. You have such a talent that you will land on your feet!!! I just know it. My prayers to you and your dear Husband. Good luck to you both:)

I completely understand. I think your town just didn't understand how lucky they were to have you there. Their loss. Having events at your house sounds like a great idea.
Good luck with hubby's surgeries.

We struggle with the same issue, the shop versue shows and the Flea market. Our shop in Knovxille TN consist of antique's, vintage and repurposed items. I am a control freak and it was hard BUT I found a great gal to run the shop PART time to alway me to do everything. It does cut in to profit a tad BUT I have three source's to pull income on most months. I hope your husband gets through okay.
